Eliciting Mental Models: a Comparison of Interview Procedures in the Context of Natural Resource Management Ecology and Society
Jones, Natalie A; University of Queensland; n.jones3@uq.edu.au; Ross, Helen; University of Queensland; Helen.Ross@uq.edu.au; Lynam, Timothy; Reflecting Society; tim.lynam@internode.on.net; Perez, Pascal; University of Wollongong; pascal@uow.edu.au.
The sustainable management of natural resources largely depends on people’s conceptions of environmental systems and how they function. The mental model construct provides an appropriate means to explore the cognitive dimension of people’s interactions with such systems. Mental models are cognitive representations of external reality that people use as the basis for acting with and within the world around them. We aimed to improve the application of the mental model construct to the field of natural resource management, with an emphasis on creek, i.e., stream, systems, by exploring how certain elicitation procedures may affect the mental models expressed. One of the initial hurdles that must be overcome is to work out how to effectively...

Factores que influyen en la distribución de nidos de la hormiga Argentina Linepithema humile Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), en un ecosistema precordillerano de la zona central de Chile Neotropical Entomology
Ipinza-Regla,J; Castro,L; Eissemann,R; Morales,M A.
The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the dependant relationship between the Argentine ant Linepithema humile Mayr, plant coverage, and human settlements. A method was designed in order to sample the presence of the Argentine ant and other ant species that may had influenced L. humile distribution, under different types of vegetation and percentages of plant coverage, taking in consideration the distance from human settlements. Eight sample stations were established. Four of these stations were found on a dwelling home and the other four were found on similar areas, but far from human settlements. Three transects were established from the center of each sampling station (Tt1, shrublike vegetation, Tt2, herblike vegetation and Tt3, no vegetation)....

State-space approach for the analysis of soil water content and temperature in a sugarcane crop Scientia Agricola
Dourado-Neto,Durval; Timm,Luís Carlos; Oliveira,Julio Cesar Martins de; Reichardt,Klaus; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Tominaga,Tania Toyomi; Cássaro,Fabio Augusto Meira.
The state-space approach is used to describe surface soil water content and temperature behaviour, in a field experiment in which sugarcane is submitted to different management practices. The treatments consisted of harvest trash mulching, bare soil, and burned trash, all three in a ratoon crop, after first cane harvest. One transect of 84 points was sampled, meter by meter, covering all treatments and borders. The state-space approach is described in detail and the results show that soil water contents measured along the transect could successfully be estimated from water content and temperature observations made at the first neighbour.
